The ministry of the door
Long before anyone hears a sermon, they are met at the door. A stranger decides in about eight seconds whether this house is safe, whether they belong here, whether they will come back. That decision is not made by the preacher. It is made by an usher who looked them in the eye, called them beloved and walked them to a seat. That is why the Psalmist said he would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. The door is not a small job. The door is a calling.
Nobody sits alone
Ushers watch the room the way a shepherd watches a field. They see the mother with three children and no free hands. They see the elder who needs the aisle seat, the visitor who slipped in late and does not know where to go, the young man crying in the back who does not want to be noticed but needs someone to notice. They bring tissue, water, a fan, a bulletin, a blanket, a chair. They are the reason a first-time guest walks out saying, I felt like somebody was expecting me.
Order that protects worship
Worship needs order to breathe. Ushers keep the aisles clear, receive the offering with integrity, guide communion, help during altar call, keep the doors during prayer and quietly handle the hundred small things that would otherwise interrupt the moving of the Spirit. When ushering is done well, the congregation never notices it - they only notice that nothing pulled them away from God.
The uniform means something
The black suit and gold sash are not decoration. They say this person is on duty, this person can be trusted, this person is here to serve you and not to be seen. Our ushers stand when others sit, arrive before the doors open and leave after the last car pulls off. It is holy work, and the ones who do it carry it with dignity.
Greeters, hospitality and armor bearers
This one team carries the whole welcome of the house. Greeters hold the door and learn names. Hospitality tends to guests, the elderly and our families before and after worship - coffee, directions, a hand to the car and a follow-up call during the week. Armor bearers support the pastoral team so they can preach, pray and shepherd without carrying every detail themselves.
Room for you on this team
You do not need to preach, sing or play an instrument to change somebody's Sunday. If you are dependable, kind and willing to be trained, there is a place for you on this team. We train new ushers, pair you with a seasoned member and teach you the posts one at a time - youth, adults, men and women all serve here.
